מטות

In this week’s parsha Hashem commands Moshe one final time before he is to die.  The commandment, however, does not seem fitting for the last action of the first leader of a people, as Hashem commands Moshe to destroy the Middianites.  As a diplomat, I cannot imagine that one would wish to be remembered by a final act of mass murder, however justified it might be based on previous actions perpetrated by the victims.

Hashem, why do you

Command me in violence

Before I pass on?
